These are the words of Jessica Lalama, a 17 year old swimmer from Ecuador. She is a member of the “Primas y Primos” Sporting Club and she started training in 2008. She was the first Ecuadorian athlete to be registered with INAS, and was also the first Ecuadorian to qualify for the Inas Global Games 2011 and the Parapanamerican Games, Guadalajara, 2011.
Jessica trains nine times a week. She is a student at the Fiscal Special Education “EFEER” school in the city of Quito. She doesn´t like to study, and attends school only 2 days a week. Her coach, Cuban professor Bárbaro Ávila sometimes becomes upset with her because she does the exact opposite of the instructions given to her when she enters the water!
Juan Carols Araujo, President of the Club Deportivo Primos Y Primas, says “Jessica is an example to follow for thousands of Ecuadorians who have an intellectual disability. Her impairment isn´t a barrier or an impediment for practicing sports at the highest level possible. Our objective is to help Jessica to be one of the best swimmers in the world, and we are sure she will be“.
